YellaWood states that KDAT lumber is lighter, can be finished immediately, and is dried more evenly to reduce the tendency of freshly treated boards to shrink, cup, or warp. Availability may depend on the product, grade, dimensions, and local supplier.


KDAT does not remove the need for proper board spacing, fastening, installation, or maintenance. It can, however, be worth considering when dimensional stability or a faster finishing schedule is important to the project.

Fasteners Matter with Pressure-Treated Wood

The lumber is only one part of the deck. Nails, screws, bolts, hangers, post bases, flashing, and other metal connectors must be appropriate for exterior use and compatible with pressure-treated wood.


YellaWood advises builders to follow applicable building-code requirements and the recommendations of the fastener or hardware manufacturer. The company notes that its micronized copper-treated products offer improved corrosion performance, but this does not mean that any indoor screw or unapproved metal connector should be used.

The new space should also be designed without blocking access to the existing water heater. Equipment eventually requires inspection, maintenance, repair, and replacement. A simple way to evaluate readiness is the water-drop test. Place a few drops of water on the surface. If they bead up, the wood may need additional drying time. When the water absorbs into the board, the lumber may be ready to accept stain or sealer. YellaWood’s guidance generally recommends staining sufficiently dry treated wood within about six weeks of construction.


A penetrating finish can help reduce moisture absorption and slow visible weathering. Homeowners should expect to clean and recoat the deck periodically based on foot traffic, furniture movement, shade, sun exposure, and the product used.
